In your opinion, which area of Canadian history (from the time period 1945-1982), was most interesting to you? Explain why.

In my opinion, the Cold War and Canada's relations was the most interesting to me. I think it is interesting for several reasons. The relationship Canada had with America was interesting because they had a common goal which brought them closer, yet they still had many strains in the relationship due to different policies. The Bomarc Missile Crisis showed that Canada would not allow such powerful weapons in it's country and wouldn't bow down to American pressure. Despite having had a part in creating the first nuclear weapon by giving uranium in the Manhattan Project, Canada refused to set up nuclear weapons, even in the name of national defense. Canada's lack of support in the Cuban Missile Crisis and Prime Minister Trudeau becoming friends with Fidel Castro also shows Canada not flinching at American pressure. I found it interesting how Canada took so many actions against American influence and against American pressure like the Massey Commission, designed to stop the influence of American Culture, and the Foregin Investment Review Agency, designed to stop American influence over Canada's industries. The relationship Canada had with America was interesting because of the different sides to it.

I found the Cold War interesting because of Canada's actions. I found it fascinating how Diefenbaker was willing to get rid of the most high tech aircraft at the time, the Avro Arrow, to prevent KGB (Soviet Union's seurity agency) from stealing the plans and that it was obsolete. The fear of spies was so significant that Canada would get rid of some of the highest tech air craft at the time in order to avoid the chance that the KGB may steal the design.
